Do Micro QR Codes Make Sense for my Company?

Here are a few informal thoughts about Micro QR codes

If you are considering a Micro QR Code:

  • just for internal tracking in the factory, aka no consumer-facing content, then please revisit the use of Data Matrix codes; they are made for that specific purpose
  • for consumer-facing content, please reconsider
    • they are not as well known as regular QR codes and consumers may not recognize that they could contain content for them
    • even the most common QR scanning tools are currently not capable of scanning Micro QR codes (this includes native phone cameras); so not only would a consumer need to know that they can scan a Micro QR code, they would also need to know with what application
  • these micro QR codes can store only a very limited amount of information
    • to generate Micro QR codes with Scantrust, you would require a very short custom-prefix/custom URL

Overall, yes, it is possible to have Micro QR Codes on the Scantrust portal; however, we do NOT recommend it!!!

  • if the size is the concern, regular QR codes can easily be printed in the size 8x8 mm and easily be read by most QR scanning applications - even smaller, but if they are much smaller consumers might simply overlook them
