Products produced before 8 December 2023 are exempt from the obligation to comply with the Regulation.
(The amendment removed the word “labelled” in July 2023)
Interpretation
- Still wines:
- Primary alcoholic fermentation completed and required alcohol content and acidity achieved
- 1308/2013: at least 3.5 grams of tartaric acid
- The 2023 vintage in Europe is excluded mainly because alcoholic fermentation is completed before December 8, 2023 for wines in Europe - the 2024 vintage is affected
- NOTE: if alcoholic fermentation of the 2023 harvest is only reached after December 8, 2023, it is not an exception.
- Primary alcoholic fermentation completed and required alcohol content and acidity achieved
- Sparkling wines:
- The second fermentation occurred and the product reached its alcohol content and overpressure conditions.
- 1308/2013: at least 8.5% alcohol and at least 3 bar excess pressure (8% and 3.5 bar for quality sparkling wines)
- The 2023 harvest or even previous harvests are affected, depending on the stage of production of the product on December 8, 2023
- NOTE: If a 2021 vintage has not completed second fermentation by December 8, 2023, it is not exempt.
- Other products, such as aromatized wine, follow a similar logic.
